VOLUNTARY RECALL FROM WELLPET LLC , WELLNESS
Wellpet LLC announced today it has voluntarily recalled certain lots of Wellness canned cat food for less than adequate levels of thiamine. Cats fed only the affected lots for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affect cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lots and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
The lots involved in this voluntary recall are:
Wellness Canned Cat Food (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from 14APR13 through 30SEP13; and Wellness Canned Cat Food Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with 10NOV13 or 17NOV13 best buy dates. Consumers who have cans from these lots should stop feeding them to their cats and call (877) 227-9587 Monday through Friday, 9am to 7 pm Eastern Time.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT HAS REPORTED THE FIRST CONFIRMED CASE OF CANINE INFLUENZA VIRUS (CIV) IN RHODE ISLAND, AND IS URGING PET OWNERS TO LIMIT CONTACT WITH SICK DOGS.
THIRTY STATES HAVE REPORTED CASES OF CIV, ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.
THE VIRUS INFECTS DOGS BUT HAS NOT BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO SPREAD TO PEOPLE OR OTHER DOMESTIC ANIMALS.
BECAUSE IT IS RELATIVELY NEW, 80 PERCENT OF DOGS THAT ARE EXPOSED TO CIV ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME SICK. MOST DOGS WILL RECOVER FROM THE INFECTION, BUT SOME MAY DEVELOP SEVERE PNEUMONIA.
COMMON SIGNS OF CIV INFECTION ARE A HIGH FEVER, LETHARGY, DECREASED APPETITE, COUGH AND NASAL DISCHARGE.
VACCINATION AGAINST CIV IS RECOMMENDED FOR HIGH-RISK ANIMALS - DOGS WHO ARE IN CONTACT WITH OTHER DOGS FREQUENTLY. DOG OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT THEIR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY IF THEIR PET BECOMES ILL.
THE VIRUS CAN LIVE TWO DAYS ON THE SURFACE OF DOG CRATES, TOYS AND FOOD DISHES, BUT IS EASILY KILLED BY DISINFECTANTS.

DOG BLOOD DONORS NEEDED!
Just like humans, dogs have different blood types. On occasion we have an emergency need to give blood to another dog. The preferred blood type is universal. If you are interested in participating in this program, your dog must weigh at least 50 pounds and be 5 years old or younger. Testing is free. Please discuss the details of this program further with your veterinarian.
